Professional Biography

Minister Prof. Dr. Salim Alio Ibro, born on 18 August 1944 in Qoryoley District, is a distinguished Somali politician, academic, and veterinary scientist with an illustrious career spanning governance, education, and cultural preservation. Currently serving as a Member of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, he has been a pivotal figure in shaping the nation’s legislative and policy landscape.

Minister Salim previously served as Acting Prime Minister of Somalia (2007) and held several key ministerial portfolios, including Justice and Religious Affairs, Energy and Water Resources, Livestock, Forestry and Range, Finance, and Higher Education.

He possesses a strong academic foundation, having pursued postgraduate studies in Infectious Diseases and Veterinary Medicine at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. A respected scholar, he served as Deputy Dean and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Somali National University (SNU).

Beyond academia and governance, Prof. Ibro is deeply committed to cultural and linguistic preservation. As Somalia’s National Commissioner for UNESCO, he championed national heritage and education initiatives. He is also the author of the Jiddo–English Dictionary, a monumental contribution to Somali linguistic scholarship and cultural understanding.

Prof. Ibro is a Founding Board Member of the National Academy of Maay Culture and Sciences, a premier institution dedicated to safeguarding Somalia’s linguistic diversity, advancing research, and promoting inclusive cultural identity.

His blend of political wisdom, scientific expertise, and cultural advocacy continues to make him one of Somalia’s most respected national figures and thought leaders in governance and development.
